Nadine Dorries Resigns as Culture Secretary
27.06.2024
Nadine Dorries has relinquished her role as Culture Secretary.
Nadine Dorries declared her departure from her position as the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) today, September 6th. This comes just one day after Liz Truss was chosen as the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Dorries submitted her resignation to outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who officially stepped down earlier today.
She stated that Truss had requested her to remain as DCMS Secretary, but she had decided to decline.
“I am delighted that Liz Truss has been elected leader of the Conservative Party,” the letter read. “I am honored that your successor has faith in me and desired me to continue as DCMS Secretary.
“However, after careful deliberation, I am writing to inform you that I will be stepping down as DCMS Secretary upon the appointment of your successor.”
As Culture Secretary, Dorries was responsible for leading an examination of the 2005 Gambling Act. A white paper outlining the government’s reform proposals was initially intended to be published earlier this year. It has been postponed several times, most recently due to the push to remove Johnson from office.
In July, after Johnson announced his resignation as Prime Minister, the DCMS maintained that the Gambling Act review white paper was still planned to be released “in the coming weeks.”
Doris assumed the role in September of 2021, succeeding Oliver Dowden following a significant government reshuffle.
It remains uncertain who will succeed Doris.
