Spanish Online Gambling Revenue Rises in Q4 2023

The Spanish online gambling industry experienced a modest uptick in earnings during the final quarter, reaching a total of €315.3 million. This represents a slight increase compared to the same period in the previous year and the preceding quarter. The rise in revenue was accompanied by a corresponding increase in overall deposits.

The fourth quarter witnessed a 0.6% growth in gross gambling revenue compared to the same period in 2022. This figure also surpasses the total generated in the third quarter by 3.6%.

Casinos emerged as the primary revenue generator in the fourth quarter, significantly outperforming other categories. The casino sector generated €171.3 million in revenue, accounting for 54.3% of the total Spanish market. This growth was fueled by a substantial 25.9% surge in slot machine revenue and a 15.3% increase in live roulette revenue.

Sports betting revenue reached €114.7 million, representing 36.4% of the total revenue. Meanwhile, poker revenue stood at €25.4 million, accounting for 8.1% of the total. Poker tournaments experienced a slight decline of 0.5%, while cash poker saw a 7.0% increase.

Bingo revenue contributed €3.8 million, representing 1.2% of the total revenue. Competition revenue was negligible at €0.05 million.

Player spending saw a notable increase in the fourth quarter, with consumers depositing a total of €1.04 billion into their online gambling accounts. This represents a 9.4% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

The average monthly number of active gaming accounts rose by 6.8% year-on-year, reaching 1,269,585.

However, the typical count of new gaming profiles dropped by 2.3% to 129,207.

Concerning operator marketing endeavors, total expenditures in the final quarter reached €113 million, a 5.3% increase from 2022. Of this sum, €53 million was allocated to promotions, €45.2 million to advertising, €14 million to affiliate marketing, and €0.75 million to sponsorships.

By the conclusion of the fourth quarter, Spain boasted 78 authorized operators. This encompasses 49 providing casino games, 43 offering sports wagering, 9 facilitating poker, 3 offering bingo, and 2 providing competitions.
