France Tackles Gambling Addiction Ahead of Euro 2024
13.06.2024
As the 2024 European Championship approaches, France is preparing to address the possible problem of wagering dependence, particularly among young adults. A fresh initiative by the national gaming regulator, ANJ, emphasizes the hazards linked with gambling, especially given that a significant portion of the French population – over 50% – intend to view the competition. Furthermore, over a third of them are considering placing wagers!
Soccer reigns supreme in French betting, accounting for over half of all online wagers and generating a staggering €40 billion (approximately $43.5 billion) in 2023 alone. The sums involved are substantial. Consider the previous two major tournaments: the 2020 Euros saw €7 billion in bets, while the 2022 World Cup reached €9 billion. Therefore, it’s a safe bet (no pun intended!) that this Euros will be massive, potentially exceeding €1 billion, particularly if France advances far.
The ANJ campaign, created by the agency Rosbeef!, targets those seemingly innocuous legal notices found in gambling advertisements. They utilize striking yellow banners and authentic tales of addiction to underscore the message that a brief disclaimer barely scratches the surface of the potential risks. The campaign directs individuals to Evalujeu, a website where they can evaluate their gambling behaviors and seek assistance if needed.
This marketing blueprint is quite thorough! It encompasses everything from online banners and Snapchat initiatives to audio commercials and even a feature in So Foot magazine. They’re also planning to release short videos with athlete testimonials.
Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, the leader of the French National Gaming Authority (ANJ), has emphasized that wagering firms must elevate their commitment to ethical gaming practices. Due to concerns regarding excessive betting during the 2021 European Championship, the ANJ will be closely monitoring activities during the upcoming Euros and Olympics to ensure compliance from all parties.
