NSW Regulator Backs Helen Coonan’s Leadership Amidst Crown Resorts Turmoil

The New South Wales gaming regulator has expressed its strong backing for Helen Coonan to continue as the head of Crown Resorts, believing her direction is paramount during this turbulent time.
ILGA Chair Philip Crawford stressed Coonan’s significance, saying that Crown requires her leadership as it maneuvers through a difficult period. He conveyed his dependence on her advice and confessed his uncertainty about who could step in if she were to depart. Crawford also proposed that fellow director Harold Mitchell should exit the company.
This comes after a scathing independent inquiry by former judge Patricia Bergin, which probed accusations of illicit financial activities at Crown’s gambling venues. The consequences compelled Crown to delay the inauguration of its opulent $2.2 billion Sydney casino. During a recent financial results briefing, Coonan acknowledged the ambiguity surrounding the Barangaroo casino’s opening date but suggested a more definite schedule becoming apparent by April.
Coonan reassured investors that she is diligently collaborating with the New South Wales gaming authority to reinstate Crown’s license, underscoring their dedication to prompt measures. She communicated her resolve to guide Crown back on course, emphasizing the commissioner’s faith in her capacity to execute the required changes.
She guaranteed everyone, however, that the hunt for a fresh chief executive is progressing well. Her period as chairperson will be brief.”
